Paul Lukas nació el 26 de mayo de 1895 en Budapest, Austria-Hungría.
Actor de teatro desde los años veinte, intervino especialmente en producciones de Max Reinhardt en Berlín y Viena.
En 1927 se traslada a Hollywood cuando le llama Adolph Zukor e inicia una brillante carrera de seductor y por su acento, de "traidor". En varias ocasiones encarnó nazis.
Nunca dejó de hacer teatro y consiguió el Oscar interpretando en la pantalla su papel de Watch on the Rhine (H. Shumlin, 1943).
Trabajó en Las calles de la ciudad (Robert Mamoulian, 1931), Por la dama y el honor (Rowland V. Lee, 1935); Éxtasis fugaz (Brief Ecstasy, E.T. Tourneur, 1944); Berlin Express (J. Tourneur, 1948); Los cuatro jinetes del Apocalipsis (Vincente Minnelli, 1961 ); Suave es la noche (H. King, 1962); 55 días en Pekín (Nicholas Ray, 1963) y Lord Jim (Richard Brooks, 1965).
Paul Lukas falleció el día 15 de agosto de 1971 en Tanger, Marruecos.
